The Scottish Cup is an annual association football knock-out cup competition for men's football clubs in Scotland. The competition was first held in 1873–74. Entry is open to all 113 clubs with full membership of the Scottish Football Association (SFA), along with up to eight other clubs who are associate members.
Although it is the second oldest competition in association football history, after the FA Cup, the Scottish Cup trophy is the oldest in association football and the oldest national trophy in the world.
FAST FACTS
- + The 1991 Scottish Cup Final is deemed as one of the very best in the modern era. Dubbed 'the family final', as the teams were managed by brothers Tommy and Jim McLean, the game was won in extra time by Motherwell.
- + In 2000 Inverness Caledonian created a big cup shock by knocking Celtic out of the Cup at Celtic Park. This prompted arguably the greatest newspaper headline of Super Caley Go Ballistic, Celtic Are Attrocious.
