The Eredivisie was founded in 1956 and is the top football league in the Netherlands, featuring powerhouse teams such as Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord. The division consists of 18 clubs who play each other twice during the season, once at home and once away.

The winner of the Eredivisie claims the Dutch National Championship. AFC Ajax has won the most titles, closely followed by PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord. Since 1965, these three clubs have won all titles except for three; the 1981 and 2009 titles went to AZ whilst FC Twente won the 2010 title.

Ajax Amsterdam won the title in 2011/2012, finishing six points clear of last year’s winners Feyenoord. For the third year running, PSV Eindhoven came third.
